Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • In a ROBO cluster running on 7.0 U3,  upgrading Witness node (ahead of data nodes) to 8.0 U3 using VUM fails.

  • In VUM, attaching baseline to the Witness node shows as 'incompatible' as it reports  "Unsupported CPU".

Environment

vSphere vSAN 8.x

vSphere vSAN 9.x

Cause

This is a known issue wherein if vSAN Witness node is deployed using OVF then upgrade using VUM cannot be performed.

Resolution

  1. Deploy a new Witness appliance with 8.0 U3 version using OVF.

(Go to Broadcom Support portal > Login with your Broadcom ID > My Downloads > VMware vSphere ESXi > Click on vSphere 8 version > Go to 'Drivers and Tools' > Click on VMware vSAN Witness Appliance and Download the OVF)

  2. Change the old witness node with newly created Witness.

(Navigate to vSAN Cluster in vSphere Client > Configure > Fault Domains > Click on 'Change Witness node'.)
