Issue/Introduction

You encounter an error when attempting to copy a virtual machine's disk file (.vmdk) from a datastore that was restored from a Pure Snapshot to another datastore using the vSphere client UI.  

vCenter copy event:  Copy of file or directory <datastore_name>/<virtual machine parent directory name>/<VM _name.vmdk from snap-<datastore_name> to <datastore_name>  

<VM-name>/<VM-name.vmdk> was initiated from 'VMware [email protected]' and completed with status 'failure'

Environment

vSphere 7.0

Resolution

There are several option for copying .vmdk files from one place to another as listed below.  

  • VMware converter
  • vmkfstools
  • SCP

Note:  Make sure the VM is powered off and snapshots consolidate or deleted before attempting.
