Issue/Introduction

• vCenter server upgrade 7 to 8 is failing on Stage 2
• You are seeing errors such as: "A problem has occurred. The source vCenter Server might have been Powered Off during this process" and "A problem occurred while - Shutting down source machine."
• 

Environment

vCenter Server 7.x

 

Cause

• vCenter Server manages the source appliance

Resolution

• On upgrade Stage1: Deploy vCenter Server, in step 3 Connect to source appliance, choose ESXi host to manage source appliance
• Continue with upgrade
• If the upgrade is failing further reset VUM as per Resetting the VMware Update Manager Database
