Issue/Introduction

You want to setup what "internet protocol", either IPv4 and/or IPv6, your managed machines uses to communicate back to the SMP (Symantec Management Platform) Server.

Environment

ITMS 8.7.x, 8.8

Resolution

Note:
In the event you want to disable one of the "Internet Protocols" from being used by managed machines, there is no need to disable IPv4 or IPv6 on OS level, you can disable them in SMP Console.

Just remember, if you want to use IPv6 on your managed machines, you need to have the proper IPv6 infrastructure in place with DHCP and DNS servers being able to serve IPv6 requests. If IPv6 is disabled, then the SMA (Symantec Management Agent) does not trigger MDNS requests. If an IPv6 address is requested and it is found on the first attempt then no more attempts are performed. That means if your environment and DNS servers support IPv6, then it needs to return IPv6 addresses to avoid MDNS calls.

IPv6 support was added with our ITMS 8.7.2 Release.

In order to enable/disable what "Internet Protocols" can be used by managed machines:

  1. In the SMP Console, go to Settings -> Agents/Plug-ins/Symantec Management Agent/Symantec Management Agent Communications profile/<SMP Server name>
  2. Under "The Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) is specified for this communication profile" section, click Edit
  3. Select the "Internet Protocol(s)" that you want to allow, as well which one is preferred. Save changes.
