Issue/Introduction

  • You are attempting to remove a vCenter server (Compute Manager) which is being already used in another NSX manager environment.
  • This existing vCenter is already linked on a different NSX as compute manager (CM).
  • You may see messages similar to the following in the NSX UI when attempting to add this compute manager:
Compute manager <name> is already registered with other NSX manager <IP:port>

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • As per Administration Guide, any components (NSX Managers, Edge Nodes, NSX Intelligence, Service Virtual Machines (SVM)) deployed by a compute manager, need to be disassociated from the compute manager before the compute manager be removed from NSX.
  • The alert is a warning that this compute manager already registered on another NSX manager and therefore it cannot be added.

Resolution

  • If you are completely decommissioning compute manager (CM) on the existing NSX-T environment and adding up in new environment, we need to first remove components, uninstall / unprepped the hosts for NSX-T, etc.
  • Once all the components are successfully removed from the existing NSX, we can go ahead and add the compute manager to the new NSX manager.

Note: Before performing the above steps, ensure you have up to date backups and the cluster is in a healthy state before each component is removed/un-prepared.
Checking NSX manager cluster status, as admin run:

   get cluster status

Ensure all services are up and cluster is formed.
