VM migration on VVOL datastore fails with: "A general system error occurred: Launch failure yyy-dd-hh "Out of resources Cause: Out of resources"

Issue/Introduction

 While migrating the VM on a VVOL Datastore Out of Resources error seen.

A general system error occurred: Launch failure 2025-xx-xx Out of resources Cause: Out of resources
  

Environment

vSphere Esxi 7.x 

 

Cause

Config vVols in VMware vSphere, used for storing VM configuration files, are fixed at 4GB in vSphere Esxi 7.x.

If this fills up it will cause issue with vmotions and snapshots for the vm on that vvol.

The vmkenel.log is showing No Space error.

The vmware logs of the vm are not rotating and show large sizes.

Resolution

 In order to work around this issue:

- Check the size of vmware.log file

- If it is bigger in size and not rotating, delete the file and create a new one

- Move the VM to another vvol volume and back to the original vvol volume by doing storage vmotion
