vCenter patch fails with the following error "Test RPM transaction failed. Collect the logs for diagnostics"

Issue/Introduction

During vCenter 7 patching pre checks fail with following error "Test RPM transaction failed. Collect the logs for diagnostics"

/var/log/vmware/applmgmt/update_microservice.log contains the following errors:

Installing package vmware-esx-netdumper-7.0.3.02400-0.0.15508020.i386 needs 4KB on the /storage/core filesystem

'com.vmware.appliance.rpm_transaction_failed', 'default_message': 'Test RPM transaction failed. Collect the logs for diagnostics'

 

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

This happens when the /storage/core filesystem has run out of space.

Resolution

To resolve this error ensure there is enough free space in the /storage/core filesystem
