Issue/Introduction

Editing a virtual machine in the vSphere Client, the Cores per Socket not seen under "Edit Settings -> Virtual Hardware -> CPU

Environment

vCenter Server 8.0

vCenter Server 7.0

Cause

This issue only can be seen in vSphere 8.0 environment and using a virtual machine hardware version 20 or later.

In virtual machine version 20, new feature Virtual Topology was added and vSphere UI has been changed slightly for this enhancement.

Please see the documentation Virtual Topology in ESXi 8.0 and Configure the CPU Topology of a Virtual Machine

Resolution

The location of the Cores per Socket select box differs depending on both of the vSphere version and the virtual machine hardware version.

In vSphere 7.0 or below, this setting can be seen Edit Settings -> Virtual Hardware -> CPU

vSphere 7.0

From vSphere 8.0 and virtual hardware version 20 or later, this setting is now under Edit Setting -> VM Options -> CPU Topology

vSphere 8.0 and virtual hardware version 20 or later

* Even in vSphere 8.0, using virtual hardware version 19 below , vSphere client UI does not change from the older version of vSphere.

Additional Information
