Issue/Introduction

After enabling vSAN File Service the network port group can't be changed.

Environment

VMware vSAN (All Versions)

vSAN File Services is enabled

Cause

vSAN File Service doesn't support file service network reconfiguration directly.

Resolution

If the vSAN File Service network port group needs to be changed follow the steps below per the version in use.

For vSAN 7.x perform the following steps.

  1. Ensure there are shares on the cluster. If not, create one. This is to ensure that file service configurations will not be deleted when disabling file service.
  2. Get the current FSVMs port group via Cluster> Configure > vSAN > Services > File Service
  3. Disable file service.
  4. Remove the old network port group via one of the below methods depending on your virtual switch type:
Remove a Port Group from a vSphere Standard Switch
    Remove a Distributed Port Group
Managing NSX Distributed Virtual Port Groups
  5. Re-enable file service by re-choosing a new network port group, but keeping the subnet/gateway unchanged.

For vSAN 8.x and higher step 4 is not required as you can change the port group during re-enabling vSAN File Service.
