Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to clean up storage LUN which is part of array based replication.

Environment

VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Resolution

Follow the below steps to perform the storage LUN cleanup at SRM and ESXi layer before deleting from storage array.

1. On the storage array end make sure the LUN is not part of any consistency group.

2. On the site recovery below steps needs to be performed:

  • Remove the VM from the protection group. - If VM is protected by the datastore group, remove their protection within the Site Recovery Manager interface. This might involve unprotecting individual VMs or removing them from the associated protection group.

Remove Protection from a Virtual Machine

  • Migrate all the other VMs residing on the datastore backed by the LUN to a different datastore.

  • Remove the datastore group from protection group.

3. Break replication of the LUN-pair (corresponding to the LUN that needs to be removed/decommissioned). This should be done from the Storage array.

4. Rescan arrays from site recovery to detect the changes being done.

5.Once the above steps are performed at SRM and storage array then you can follow the steps to detach the LUN from ESXi.

  • Unmount the datastore and detach the LUN from ESXi

6.Rescan the storage at cluster on vCenter UI.

7.After above steps are followed LUN can be deleted on storage array.
