Issue/Introduction

When hosts in a vSAN cluster are experiencing network errors, the following symptoms may arise:

  • VM migration tasks and maintenance mode tasks fail
  • The host may exhibit High pNIC alarms.
  • VMs on the may occasionally show inaccessible from vCenter.

Environment

vSAN 7x

vSAN 8x

Cause

A high count of Receive CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) errors on the physical NIC used by the vSAN network.

To verify the presence of CRC errors:

  • Login to the effected host using SSH.
  • Run the following command: (on the vmnics used for vSAN)

esxcli network nic stats get -n vmnic#

Resolution

The CRC errors indicate a hardware-related issue on the network link. Contact your network hardware support vendor. See vSAN Performance Degradation Due to Physical NIC Errors for additional vmnic CRC troubleshooting.
