Issue/Introduction

Per the documentation from SaltProject, a Salt minion should never be a higher version than the Salt master. Ideally, the master and the minion will always be the same version whenever possible.

See SaltProject documentation for more information on upgrading. https://docs.saltproject.io/salt/install-guide/en/latest/topics/upgrade.html

Environment

SaltProject - all versions

Tanzu Salt - all versions

Aria Config - all versions

Resolution

  1. Backup the minion configuration.
  2. Stop the minion daemon.
  3. Remove the currently installed minion.
  4. Ensure the repository is setup for the OS package manager.
  5. Follow instructions from https://docs.saltproject.io/salt/install-guide/en/latest/topics/install-by-operating-system/index.html to install the version matching your Salt master
  6. Restore the Salt minion configuration.
    1. Do not start the minion service yet
    2. If the minion service started automatically after install, go ahead and stop the minion service
  7. Enable the minion daemon to initiate on startup and start the service.
