Issue/Introduction

When logged into a vCenter through the VAMI and attempting to change the DNS server(s) used by the vCenter, the following error message is received:

  • Unable to authorize user

Environment

  • vCenter 7.x
  • vCenter 8.x

Cause

This error will be encountered when attempting to change the DNS server(s) used by the vCenter when logged into the VAMI with the [email protected] account.

Making a hostname or DNS server change on a vCenter requires the root account to be used. 

Resolution

Log into the VAMI as the root account, then proceed to follow the steps from KB article 375247 to change the DNS server or servers used by the vCenter.
