Issue/Introduction

  • Restore of VM from Rubrik backups.
  • In vCenter "vpxd" logs (Path: /var/log/vmware/vpxd/), seeing below error.

ODBC error: (22001) - ERROR: value too long for type character varying(##)

Cause

For some reason when the VM is restored the “MAC Address” field value in the VM’s vmx file populates with text of “Backup Encryption Key:…”, which is an invalid value. It seems the VCSA is blocking the value from being added to the VCDB.

Resolution

From the vSphere client UI:

  1. Edit the VM.
  2. Remove the NIC and save.
  3. Edit the VM again.
  4. Add a NIC and save again.
  5. Confirm the VCSA "vpxd" service remains running; is no longer crashing.

Additional Information

It is possible the error relates to an invalid entry in the VCDB. If the above scenario does not match yours, please review the below linked article.
