A dashboard in VMware Aria Operations indicates '0% capacity remaining' for a specific cluster.
Aria Operations' capacity analytics, as shown on the Cluster Compute Resource 'Capacity' tab, accounts for any cluster reserves, such as those for HA and buffers. For example, a cluster with 2 TB of total memory and a 25% reservation will have an effective usable capacity of only 1.5 TB. The system will calculate the remaining capacity based on the 1.5 TB usable capacity, not the full 2 TB. When the memory demand reaches this 1.5 TB threshold, the system correctly reports 0% capacity remaining.
Environment
Aria Operations 8.x
Cause
When HA and buffer reservations are set for CPU and Memory, Aria Operations calculates the 'Usable Capacity' by subtracting the reserved percentage from the total capacity. Capacity remaining metrics are then based on usable capacity rather than total capacity. For example, with 25% reserved from a total of 2 TB memory, only 1.5 TB is considered usable.
Resolution
This is expected behavior in Aria Operations. The capacity calculation logic is working as designed to reflect the realistic usable capacity after reservations.
