Issue/Introduction

When a hardware failure occurs for a vSAN disk on a single ESXi host in a cluster, Aria Operations generates the alert:

"Overall health of vSAN disk(s) is in bad state."

However, instead of identifying only the affected host, the alert incorrectly appears for all hosts in the vSAN cluster. This can lead to confusion and excessive alerts across the environment.

Environment

  • Aria Operations 8.x

Resolution

Based on the observed symptoms, there are two alert definitions targeting different objects but overlapping in functionality:

  • The overall health of disk(s) is in bad state – scoped to the vSAN Disk Group object.

  • The overall health of vSAN disk(s) is in bad state – scoped to the Host System object.

Since the Host System–scoped alert triggers notifications for every host in the vSAN cluster (even when the issue affects only one host), it is recommended to disable this alert to prevent excessive and potentially misleading notifications.

Steps to disable the alert:

  1. In Aria Operations, navigate to Operations → Configurations.

  2. Click on Policy Definition and select the respective policy.

  3. Go to Edit Policy.

  4. Click on Alert and Symptoms.

  5. Set Object Type to Host System.

  6. Search for the alert "The overall health of vSAN disk(s) is in bad state."

  7. Disable the alert.

  8. Click Save to apply the changes.

Note: Ensure that the "The overall health of vSAN disk(s) is in bad state" alert is enabled as this alert is triggered only for the affected vSAN Disk.
