HCX Manager boots into emergency mode after disk space increase with the error: "You are in emergency mode"

Issue/Introduction

  • The HCX Manager partition was increased using the HCX - Increasing HCX Manager Disk Space for HCX Software Version 4.10 or Higher KB.
  • Post changes, HCX is not booting, and entering emergency mode with an error similar to the following can be observed on the VM console. 
    You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view
    system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or "exit"
    to boot into default mode.
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or press Control-D to continue):
  • After you enter your root credentials and use the command journalctl -xb, observe the error similar to the following:
    3.539122] mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
    3.561622] EXT4-fs (sdb1): Unrecognized mount option "`auto" or missing value

Cause

A non-standard character, such as backtick (`), was accidentally typed or pasted into the /etc/fstab file, which prevents the system from booting.

Resolution

Note: Ensure you have a valid backup and snapshot before the changes.

Correct the /etc/fstab entry and reboot the HCX Manager VM.

Steps:

  1. Access HCX Manager VM console (vCenter).
  2. Log in as root.
  3. Edit fstab: vi /etc/fstab
  4. Correct issue, Save Changes.
  5. Reboot VM
