Issue/Introduction

vSphere Replication (VR) instances may experience intermittent disconnections, manifesting in various ways. Symptoms commonly include:

  • Intermittent disconnections from the vCenter Server.
  • Inability to reach the vSphere Replication Appliance Management Interface (VAMI) on port 5480.
  • Intermittent disconnects from the Site Recovery Manager (SRM) / vSphere Replication Management Server (VRMS) site pair.
  • Unable to reach one or all DNS servers.
    These disconnections are often temporary but disruptive, impacting replication health and management.

Environment

  • vSphere Replication (All versions)

Cause

The root cause of these intermittent issues was identified as a duplicate IP address present in the environment, conflicting with the vSphere Replication appliance's assigned IP.

Resolution

To diagnose and resolve this issue:

  1. Identify Potential Duplicate: Power off the vSphere Replication appliance.
  2. Test IP Conflict: After powering off the VR appliance, attempt to ping its assigned IP address from another machine on the network.
  3. Confirm Duplicate: If you receive a reply to the ping request, it confirms that another device in your environment is using the same IP address that was assigned to your vSphere Replication appliance.
  4. Remediate: Identify the conflicting device and reconfigure its IP address, or assign a new, unique IP address to the vSphere Replication appliance. Ensure all DNS records and vCenter registrations are updated accordingly if the VR appliance's IP is changed.

The symptoms associated with duplicate IP addresses can vary greatly depending on the network topology, timing of device power-on, and which device responds first to ARP requests.
