Issue/Introduction

Running Policy Server and AdminUI 12.8SP6 and wanting to upgrade by installing them with another account and partition on the same machine,

"Should all the agents be registered again with this new installation now?"

Resolution

If the Encryption Key for the new Policy Server is the same, then no re-registration is needed for the Agents with the new 12.9 Policy Server (1).

The Encryption Key is a "policy store key [that] is used to encrypt certain data in the policy store. The policy store key is stored, encrypted, in an on-disk file." (2)(3).

When not recalling the Encryption Key to set it at installation time, update it before doing the installation of the 12.9 version (4).

Further, installing 2 instances of Policy Server on the same machine is out of support and not recommended.

The main problem is that the SiteMinder installers keep track of the installation, as path and versions.

So, to install again the same version, but on a different path, from a different user, then archive the current "tracking" files (5)(6).

As said above, installing more than 1 Policy Server on the same machine is not something supported out of the box.

That means the product hasn't been designed for that sake.

So, to make it working to help the custom way chosen to upgrade the product, archive the files (5).

If not, by installing the second instance of Policy Server 12.9, the installer might ask to upgrade the existing instance instead.

Ensure that the root or other user installing the new 12.9 version has no related Policy Server environment set when running the installer.
