Issue/Introduction

For all-flash clusters, where a cache disk fails and a replacement is otherwise unavailable, claiming the disk group fails via esxcli with the error "Unable to add device: naa.58############## is tagged as capacity flash and can not be used as a vSAN cache flash"

Environment

8.0

Resolution

Check the IsCapacityFlash tag on the disk:

# vdq -q -d naa.58##############
[
    \{
"Name"     : "naa.58##############",
"VSANUUID" : "",
"State"    : "Eligible for use by VSAN",
"ChecksumSupport": "0",
"Reason"   : "None",
"IsSSD"    : "1",
"IsCapacityFlash": "1",
"IsPDL"    : "0",
    \},

Untag IsCapacityFlash on the disk:

# esxcli vsan storage tag remove -d naa.58##############
