Storage Rescan is failing on ESXi Host

Issue/Introduction

You might experience one or more of the following Symptoms:

• Host is showing "Not responding" in the vSphere Web Client
• You have multiple Virtual Machines which cannot be powered on
• Storage rescans triggered by 3rd party back-up application are timing out causing the back-ups to fail

 

You observe the following Symptoms:

• In one or both of the following Logs you observe the error: 

/var/log/vmkernel.log

/var/log/vmkwarning.log

 

WARNING: ScsiScan: 3180: Waiting for scan to finish on vmhba######

 

• In the vSphere Web Client, the Tasks of the Host are showing failed Rescan(s). Example:

Environment

All ESXi Versions

Cause

A faulty internal status on the reported vmhba(s) is causing the rescans to fail

Resolution

Perform a reboot of the affected ESXi Host to clear the fault state.

If the issue persists after reboot, open a Ticket with VMware by Broadcom Support

along with gathering & uploading the logs of the affected Host(s) for further investigation.
