Issue/Introduction

  • VCF 9.0 greenfield deployment of the vCenter component fails
  • The Installer fails to clean up the partitons created on the ESXi disk
  • The deployment is now stalled as no component can be stored on the partitioned disk
/var/log/vmware/vcf/domainmanager/ci-installer-<id>/workflow_<####/vcsa-cli-installer.log

2025-08-05 07:50:56,434 - vCSACliInstallLogger - ERROR - Exception message: VSANBootstrapTask: The cache disk/s ['naa.#############'] is/are in an invalid state. VSANBootstrapTask: The capacity disk/s ['naa.#############', 'naa.#############', 'naa.#############', 'naa.#############', 'naa.#############'] is/are in an invalid state. VSANBootstrapTask: The minimum capacity required for deploying a vCenter Server with a bootstrap cluster is 75 GB, but the available size is 0.0 GB

Environment

VCF 9.0

Cause

This is caused by the failure of the Installer to clean up the disk after the deployment failure.

Resolution

VMware by Broadcom is aware of this issue and it will be addressed in a future release. To workaround this issue following the steps below to clear all partitions on the disk:

Option 1:

  1. Run the following in SSH session to the deployment host:

esxcli vsan cluster leave
esxcli vsan storage remove -s <vsan-disk-id>

where <vsan-disk-id> is the disk that is reported in the log error message (i.e. naa.#############)

Option 2:

  1. Locate the disk in the ESXi Host Client UI and use the 'Clear partition table' option. Please see Clear a Device Partition Table in theVMware Host Client
  2. Reboot the host.
