Issue/Introduction

  • You would like to know what are the supported end points and limits for forwarding logs to Aria Operations for Logs using the Aria Operations deployed Cloud Proxy for Log Forwarding
  • You would also like to know what are the vCenter limitations for the log forwarding

Environment

Aria Operations 8.18.x

Aria Operations for Logs 8.18.x

Resolution

  • All endpoints which are in the reachable network and have an Agent (liagent) or a syslog client can send the logs to the Cloud Proxy Log Forwarder
  • The document: Cloud Proxy Recommendation and Limitations, mentions the following limits
    • The Cloud Proxy Log Forwarder can be used only for on-premise vCenter VMs
    • To collect the logs from the required VMs, the user needs to configure syslog or agents
  • In terms of log ingestion protocols, the Cloud Proxy Log Forwarder in 8.18.x and the Aria Operations for Logs 8.18.x appliance both support the same protocols (syslog parsing is not as rich in Log Forwarder)
  • In regards to the vCenter limitation as it relates to log forwarding:
    • The Cloud Proxy Log Forwarder doesn't support vCenter event, task and alarm collection / forwarding

NOTE: This has been added in VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 and above

    • It is possible to manually configure the vCenter to send its own logs via syslog to the Cloud Proxy Log Forwarder.

NOTE: In VCF 9.0 this can be done through the new centralized log collection feature.
