Issue/Introduction

Customers may question whether Symantec Email Security.cloud stores email message content or attachments while emails are processed or routed through the service.

This article clarifies how Email Security.cloud handles email data during message processing.

Environment

Symantec Email Security.cloud

Resolution

Email Security.cloud does not store email message content or attachments during transit.

  • Email bodies and attachments are processed in memory only.

  • Message content is not written to disk and is not retained after processing.

  • Once security scanning and policy evaluation are complete, messages are delivered or forwarded immediately.

Email Security.cloud retains limited metadata only for operational and audit purposes, such as:

  • Sender and recipient addresses

  • Message processing timestamps

  • Policy actions applied

  • Internal message identifiers

This metadata does not include email bodies or attachments.

Typical retention periods for metadata and logs include:

  • Track & Trace logs: approximately 30 days

  • Backend service logs: up to 14 days

  • Data Protection policy logs: up to 40 days

  • Data Feed API logs: up to 7 days

  • Audit logs: up to 1 year
