Issue/Introduction

When attempting to download bundles using the older version of the VCF Download Tool (previously known as OBTU in VCF 5.x), customers may encounter the following error:

Got UnknownHostException connecting to depot.vmware.com
Failed to download async patch input specs from depot
com.vmware.evo.sddc.lcm.model.depot.exception.DepotUnknownHostException: Error connecting to depot.vmware.com
        at com.vmware.evo.sddc.lcm.bundle.download.depot.DepotBundleDownloadServiceImpl.downloadAsyncPatchInputSpec(DepotBundleDownloadServiceImpl.java:1614)

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation

Cause

This issue occurs because:

The old OBTU tool (used in VCF 5.2.0.0 and earlier) attempts to connect to the legacy VMware depot (depot.vmware.com), which is no longer in use.

As of VCF 9.0.0.0, bundle downloads have moved to the new Broadcom depot, which uses token-based authentication.

Resolution

To avoid this error, customers should:

  1. Download and use the latest version of the VCF Download Tool (formerly OBTU) here.

My Downloads > VMware Cloud Foundation > VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 > VMware Cloud Foundation Installer > Drivers & Tools > VCF Download Tool

  2. Use the correct parameters for token-based authentication:

    For online depot access:
    --depotDownloadToken

    For offline depot access:
    --depotDownloadTokenFile

Refer to the latest VCF product documentation for detailed instructions on how to use the tool.
Use the --help flag with the tool to explore all available commands and usage examples.
