Issue/Introduction

In VMware Cloud Director version 10.6, users may notice that the "Monitoring Chart" button is missing from the Virtual Machine UI. This button is typically used to view VM performance metrics such as CPU, memory, and disk usage over time.

Symptoms include:

  • Absence of the Monitoring Chart button in the VM UI.

  • Inability to view historical VM performance metrics.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.0

Cause

This issue occurs when the Cassandra service is not configured in the VMware Cloud Director 10.6.0 environment.

Resolution

1. Check if Cassandra is already configured in VCD

Run the following on any Cloud Director cell:

  • /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool cassandra --dump

The output should look like this:

Current cassandra cluster configuration:
Nodes: null
Port: null

If the Nodes and Port are null as shown above, Cassandra is not configured

2. Check if Cassandra is installed

*Note: Cassandra should not be installed on the appliances. Use separate machines if you are using the appliance.

Run:

  • which cassandra

Or:

  • systemctl status cassandra

If Cassandra is not found, proceed to the install step below.

3. Install Cassandra

4. Ensure

  • Cassandra service is installed and running.

  • Port 9042 is listening and reachable from all Cloud Director cells.

  • Cassandra configuration shows when running this command

    • /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/cell-management-tool cassandra --dump
  • Cloud Director service is restarted after changes:

    systemctl restart vmware-vcd
