Issue/Introduction

When powering on a virtual machine (VM) with a 32-bit Windows 8 or Windows 8.1U3 guest OS on an ESXi 8.0 or later host with Sapphire Rapids hardware, the system encounters Error Code: 0x0000000A.

vSphere ESXi 8.0 and later with Sapphire Rapids hardware

Cause

This issue occurs when 32-bit versions of Windows 8/8.1U3 attempt to enable the AMX (Advanced Matrix Extensions) instruction set.
AMX was added in Virtual Machine Hardware Version 20 and is only supported in 64-bit mode.

Resolution

To work around the error,

Create a virtual machine with hardware version 19 or lower.
