Issue/Introduction

Changing the storage policy from Conserve space when possible to Reserve space , Reapplying the policy to the VM fails with "The operation is not supported on the object. 'Conserve space when possible' to 'Reserve space' is not supported. The VM Storage Policy Compliance shows "Out of Date"

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

The below conversion are not supported

  1. Thin to Lazy zero thick   ( Conserve space when possible allocation to Reserve space)
  2. Lazy zero thick to thin  ( Reserve space to Conserve space when possible allocation)
  3. Eager zero thick to thin  (Fully initialized to Conserve space when possible allocation )
  4. Eager zero thick to Lazy zero thick  (Fully initialized to Reserve space)

Resolution

To Make the Storage Policy Compliance compliant :

  • Change policy - "Conserve space when possible allocation type" to "Fully initialized"  or "Reserve space" to "Fully initialized" and reapply the VM

or Change the volume allocation in the storage policy to the previous allocation type and reapply to the VM.
