Issue/Introduction

During the ESXi cluster preparation for NSX, the NSX Manager UI displays "Preparation Failed" for the affected cluster. Within the NSX Configuration column, the status appears as "Installed Skipped," and the host Status is listed as "Unknown".

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

This issue may occur if the hosts in the cluster have inconsistent uplink mappings. When NSX attempts to apply the Transport Node Profile, it enforces a uniform configuration across all hosts. As a result, it expects each host within the cluster to have an identical uplink mapping setup. Any discrepancies in the uplink configuration can cause the preparation process to fail.

Resolution

Reviewed the hosts within the cluster to ensure consistent uplink mappings and Distributed Virtual Switch (DVS) configurations.

If the cluster is designed to support varying uplink and VDS configurations across individual hosts, the Transport Node Profile cannot be applied at the cluster level during the NSX preparation process. In such cases, each host must be prepared for NSX individually to accommodate the differing network setups.
