I/O filter failures present after vSAN failures

Issue/Introduction

See, “Registration/unregistration of third-party IO filter storage providers fails on a host” messages in vCenter for each of the hosts.  The storage providers under VC > Configure > Storage Providers is completely blank.  In some cases there might be some storage providers, but the vSAN storage provider is missing.  Running the sync button in the storage providers page fails with, “Operation failed. The storage service is not initialized. Try again later.”

In the VC /var/log/vmware/vmware-sps/sps.log you may see:  sms.fault.ServiceNotInitialized.

In the ESXi host /var/log/iofiltervpd.log you may see:  “Client certificate not presented”.

Environment

VMware vSAN (All Versions)

Cause

Some or all of the storage providers are not starting.

Resolution

Restart the SPS service on the VC:  service-control --stop vmware-sps && service-control --start vmware-sps

After restarting the SPS service, the Storage Providers page should show all available storage providers in an online state.
