Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to remove an unused storage policy from VMware Cloud Director(VCD) UI listed under Provider VDC.
  • This storage policy was used by VCDA(VMware Cloud Director Availability) as a destination for virtual machine replications and the content was successfully migrated to new  storage policy.
  • Deleting the storage policy as per the steps in the documentation Delete a Storage Policy from a VMware Cloud Director Organization Virtual Data Center fails with errors:

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.1.1

Cause

This issue occurs when the storage policy is in use by any objects(For ex: vApps/vApp templates/VM, etc.) or there are stale references in the Cloud Director database for any objects pointing to this storage policy.

Resolution

  1. If the storage policy is in use by any VMs/vApps/media objects, identify and migrate them to another storage policy following the instructions provided in this KB: Error: "Storage policy "############" cannot be deleted since it is currently in use." when detaching storage policy from Organization VDCs .
  2. If the UI method(s) does not work, database modifications may be required to remove/update any objects that is leveraging the storage policy.
