Issue/Introduction

Creating a new Virtual machine or snapshot operation may fail with below error:

Cannot complete the file creation operation. There are currently 1 usage fault domain. The operation requires 2 more usable fault domains. Failed to create object.




While creating the Virtual machines it will report below warning.

Datastore does not match current VM policy.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x
VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

This is due to an insufficient number of Fault domain or Standalone hosts in the vSAN cluster.

Storage Policy Minimum number of Standalone host /Fault Domain
FTT-1 RAID-1 3
FTT-2 RAID-1 5
FTT-3 RAID-1 7
FTT-1 RAID-5 4
FTT-2 RAID-6 6

Resolution

  • Make sure the vSAN cluster having a minimum number of hosts as per the Storage policy in use.


  • If Fault domain is configured, make sure there are minimum number of Fault domain required as per Storage policy.
