Issue/Introduction

ESXi host using a hardware graphics device on the ESXi host

VM when selected to use hardware 3d rendere will fail to power on with message "No host is compatible with the virtual machine."

Device 'Video Card' is not supported. This is a general limitation of the virtual machine's compatibiltiy with the ESXi version of the selected host. A hardware 3D renderer is not available on the host.

/var/run/log/hostd.log on ESXi host shows 

[timestamp] In(166) Hostd[2100189]: [Originator@6876 sub=Vimsvc.##-########] Event 625 : Message on <VM NAME> on <ESXI HOST> in ha-datacenter: Hardware GPU resources are not available. The virtual machine will use software rendering.

 

Environment

vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

Associated GPU graphics card VIB files not installed on the ESXi host 

Resolution

Place the host in maintenance mode and install the associated GPU graphics card VIB files on the host.
