Issue/Introduction

When navigating to Metrics > Properties > Configuration for a Virtual Machine (VM) object in Aria Operations, the "Creation Date (ms)" property is not displayed.

Environment

Aria Operations 8.x

Cause

This behavior occurs when the creation date property is either:

  • Not set, or Set to the default value 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z in the vCenter Managed Object Browser (MOB) for the corresponding VM.

Resolution

Since Aria Operations relies on the source data from vCenter, if the creation date is missing or set to the default, Aria Operations will not display it.

This is expected behavior for Virtual Machines that were created prior to vSphere to version 6.7.

Key insights:

  • The Creation Date property for VMs was introduced in vSphere 6.7.

  • Only VMs created after the vSphere 6.7 will have the creation date properly set and visible.

  • VMs created prior to vSphere 6.7 will either lack this property or have the default timestamp 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z.

How to Retrieve the VM Creation Date from vCenter MOB:

  1. Access the vCenter MOB using the following URL format:

    https://<vCenter-IP>/mob/?moid=<VM-MOID>&doPath=config

  2. To find the <VM-MOID>:

    • Login to Aria Operations.

    • Navigate to the Virtual Machine object.

    • Go to Metrics > Properties > Summary > MOID.
