The host customization is blank when attempting to apply a host profile

Issue/Introduction

ESXi host profile cannot apply to an ESXi host.
The host profile custom configuration field is blank and does not populate with any values. 
The options to remediate or pre-check the host are greyed out. 

Errors similar to the following may be present in the ESXi host syslogs:
/var/run/log/syslog.log

YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ Er(11) hostprofile[#######]: opID=########-#######-auto-####-h5:########-##-##-WorkQueue-########-##-####: Raising fault: com.vmware.vim.profile.host.ExecuteError.InvalidNICCount.label^@

YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ Er(11) hostprofile[#######]: opID=########-#######-auto-####-h5:########-##-##-WorkQueue-########-##-####: Execute operation failed.

Environment

vSphere 7.X
vSphere 8.X

Cause

There is a configuration difference between the ESXi host and the host profile.

Resolution

Review the host profile for any discrepancies between the host where the profile was generated and the host where the profile is being applied.
