VM Restoration Fails on vSAN Cluster Using Avamar Backup Tool

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Restoration of the Virtual Machines using the Avamar backup tool on vSAN clusters fails with the below errors message:

  Soap fault detected, Find VM - NOT ok, Msg:VM creation failed during restore.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x
VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

Issue caused due to multiple clusters within the same vCenter Datacenter having the same name for the vSAN datastore.
The default name for a vSAN datastore is "vsanDatastore".

Identical names for the datastores will cause conflicts during the restoration process.

Resolution

This is a third-party issue related to the Avamar backup tool. Please reach to Dell Avamar support for more details.

Work-around:
To avoid the restore failures, ensure that vSAN datastore names follow unique naming conventions within the vCenter Datacenter.

To rename the vSAN datastore, please follow below steps.

• In the vSphere Client, navigate to the datastore.
• Right-click the datastore to rename, and select Rename.
• Enter a new datastore name.

Changing the name of the vSAN datastore
