USB serial number has an “&” and is being blocked

Issue/Introduction

• Carbon Black Cloud console shows a block event for a device without a serial number
  
  
  
  
• USB being blocked does not show in the "USB Devices" tab of the Carbon Black Cloud console
• USB Approval has been created, but block is still occuring
• USB Approval contains an "&" symbol
• USB device does not have a serial number assigned, only a device instance id

Environment

• Carbon Black Cloud: All Supported Versions

Cause

• Manufactuer had decided to not program/assign a serial number to the device
• USB Approval includes a device instance ID instead of a serial number

Resolution

A device instance ID (which will have "&" symbols in it) can not be used as a substitute for a serial number. There are two options:

1. Remove the device instance ID from the approval (less secure)
   
   or
   
   
2. Obtain USB devices that are serialized by the manufactuer.
