VMware Live Recovery

Issue/Introduction

Checking the size consumed by the Protection group shows higher than expected usage.

Protection group includes one or more VMs.

Protection group configured with VM name pattern and '*'.

Environment

VMware Live Cyber Recovery 7.27.x

Cause

The size descrepency may occurr if the VMs in the protection group was re-imaged or restored from a different backup solution. Restoring the VM with the same name results in VM UUID being changed. If the protection group has VM previewed with name pattern with asterick will result in the same VM being snapshotted twice or duplicated.

Resolution

When there is a need to restore the VM for unforseen reason, ensure the VM uuid is retained. Refer Changing or keeping a UUID of a VM

Review the snapshots and delete the ones which seems to be old as below

  • Go to Virtual Machine tab in the VLCR UI
  • Search for the name VM
  • Click on recover guest file , here you can see the PG name and the last snapshot taken time frame.
  • Go back to the respective protection group
  • Look for the time frame that you captured in the previous steps and depending on what you want to retain you can delete the ones below this time frame.

Note: Once the snapshots are deleted, allow some time for the Space reclamation task to run and reclaim the freed space.
