Inventory Solution

Issue/Introduction

You have noticed that the number of Inventory Solution licenses consumed exceeds the expected number of active devices.

Environment

Inventory Solution 8.x

Cause

Unmanaged computers remain in an active state. To release an inventory license, these unmanaged computers must have an unmanaged status, such as Retired.

Resolution

Per the Altiris Licensing - Technical FAQ set the unmanaged computers as desired to a non-active status.

As an example way to do this in bulk, follow the steps below to set all desired unmanaged computers to Retired

  1. In the console, navigate to Manage > Computers
  2. On the left under Computer Views and Groups, select All Computers
  3. In the center pane, to the right of the search box, click the double down arrow icon
  4. In the top row of icons, click the disc icon to "Save filter as"
  5. Choose a folder location to save this new filter to and give it a name such as "Unmanaged Computers," and click Save
  6. In the left pane, find this new filter in the Filters section and highlight it
  7. In the center pane, click the double down arrows
  8. Click the Add Filter Criteria drop-down
  9. Select Managed (Computer)
  10. Set the = condition to 0 (0 is for unmanaged, 1 is for managed)
  11. Click the disc icon at the top to save the filter
  12. Select all computers or all computers that you want to have release an Inventory Solution License
  13. Right-click the selection and select Asset Functions > Retire Asset(s)
