Issue/Introduction

This article will clarify how to select the VM option for Kylin Linux.

Symptoms:

  • Kylin Linux guest operating system option is unavailable in the vSphere client with hardware version lower than 22 during the process of creating or editing a virtual machine.
  • This issue is observed on Kylin Advanced Server virtual machines with virtual hardware versions 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, and Kylin Desktop virtual machines with virtual hardware versions 19, 20 and 21.

Environment

  • VMware ESXi 7.0.x
  • VMware ESXi 8.0.x
  • VMware ESXi 9.0.x

Cause

Virtual hardware version 22 introduced new selections for Kylin Linux. See Virtual machine hardware versions to determine which VMware product releases support this virtual hardware version.

Resolution

Kylin Linux is a supported guest operating system on VMware vSphere.

Please refer to the Broadcom Compatibility Guide , which is the authority on specific supported configurations of guest operating system releases and VMware vSphere releases.

The vSphere release with hardware version 22 and higher, select "Kylinlinux (64-bit)" as Guest OS option during the process of creating or editing a virtual machine. If a particular vSphere release with hardware version lower than 22 does not provide a guest operating system option for Kylin Linux in the vSphere client during the process of creating or editing a virtual machine, select "Other N.x Linux (64-bit)" as the guest operating system, where N is best match for the major Linux kernel version included in the Kylin Linux release.
