Issue/Introduction

Starting with version 10.4.2.2, you can change the default length of the automatically generated administrator passwords.
The default password length is 8 characters.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director

Cause

The default length of the automatically generated local administrator password is 8 characters.

Resolution

To increase the length of passwords, which are created automatically by VMware Cloud Director, a system administrator must change the AdminPasswordLength parameter by using the cell management tool.

  1. ssh to the VCD primary cell
  2. Run the following cell-management-tool commands. The example below changes the length to 16 characters. To change to a different length for example 20 characters, use -v 20 instead of -v 16

    cd /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin
    ./cell-management-tool manage-config -n AdminPasswordLength -v 16

To apply this change to existing VMs

  1. Locate the VM in VCD and select Guest OS Customization
  2. Click the Edit Link
  3. Within the General section, Check Enable guest customization
  4. Within the Password Reset section check Allow local administrator password and Auto generate password.
  5. Save the changes via the SAVE button
  6. To apply to the VM select ALL ACTIONS > Power > Power On, Force Recustomization.
