Issue/Introduction

After replacing a disk on the Physical ESXi server, an alarm was triggered indicating a hardware sensor state issue:

  • Alarm Name: Host hardware sensor state

  • Host: abc.test.com

  • Sensor ID: 169 (Type: Storage)

  • Description: System Board 1 Drive 15 state deassert

  • Part Name/Number: XXXXXXXX

  • Manufacturer: <XXXXX>

This alarm monitors changes in hardware sensor states. Users can check more details under the Hardware Status tab of the host.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

The alarm may be caused by either:

  1. Actual hardware issue related to the part identified in the alarm.

  2. False positive triggered erroneously by the system.

Resolution

  • Perform a hardware diagnostic test to verify if there is an actual hardware issue.

  • Contact the hardware vendor for further analysis and validation.

  • Check the Hardware Status tab in vSphere to confirm the system sensor readings.

  • If determined to be a false positive, clear the alarm or acknowledge it in vSphere.

  • Monitor system performance to ensure there are no actual hardware failures post-resolution.

Additional Information

  • This type of alarm generally indicates hardware concerns such as over-temperature warnings, fan failures, or storage issues etc...

  • However, if the system is functioning correctly, it could be a false positive rather than a real failure. Post confirming with Hardware Vendor.

  • Sensor 169, of type storage, monitors System Board 1 Drive 15. The "deassert" state suggests that the drive is operational despite the alarm.
