Issue/Introduction

When PCI vSphere DirectPath I/O devices are made available to a virtual machine, you cannot perform certain operations on the virtual machine

  • You cannot live migrate this VM to another host.

  • No snapshot operations are allowed.

  • The VM cannot be suspended or resumed.

Environment

VMware vSphere vCenter

Cause

-When PCI vSphere DirectPath I/O devices are made available to a virtual machine, you cannot perform certain operations on the virtual machine. These operations include suspending, migration with vMotion, and taking or restoring snapshots of the virtual machine.

Resolution

Remove PCIe Passthrough (DirectPath I/O)

If PCIe passthrough is no longer required, follow the steps below to safely remove the device.

  1. Shutdown the VM

  2. Go to VM Edit settings and remove the PCI device.

vMotion operation will work post removing PCIe Passthrough (DirectPath I/O) device from the Virtual Machine
