Issue/Introduction

  • Editing a virtual machine in the vSphere Client, the Enable vCPU hot add checkbox not seen under "Edit Settings -> Virtual Hardware -> CPU

Environment

  • vCenter Server 8.0
  • vCenter Server 7.0

Cause

  • This issue can only be seen in a vSphere 8.0 environment, where the virtual machine hardware version is 20 or later.
  • In virtual machine hardware version 20, a new feature, Virtual Topology, was added, and the vSphere UI has been changed slightly for this enhancement. Please see the documentation Virtual Topology in ESXi 8.0 and Configure the CPU Topology of a Virtual Machine for more details.

Resolution

  • The location of the "Enable CPU hot add" checkbox differs depending on the version of vSphere and the hardware version of the VM.

  • vSphere 6.x and 7.x this setting was found under Edit Settings -> Virtual Hardware -> CPU

vSphere 7.0

  • Starting vSphere version 8.x, this setting is now found under Edit Settings -> VM Options -> CPU Topology

vSphere 8.0
