"Failed to cleanup registration key" "Error closing the volume" warnings against local NVMe datastore

Issue/Introduction

An ESXi host has a local NVMe-backed VMFS datastore (this may be on free space on the ESXi boot device).

/var/log/vmkernel.log repeatedly reports warnings against the datastore similar to:

vmkwarning: cpu##:2097526)WARNING: HBX: 2720: Failed to cleanup registration key on volume########-########-####-############: Failure
vmkwarning: cpu##:2097526)WARNING: Vol3: 4323: Error closing the volume: . Eviction fails: Failure

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.0U1 and above.

Resolution

These log entries are benign and can be safely ignored.

The log entries will be eliminated in ESXi 9.0.
