Issue/Introduction

When attempting to attach an SR-IOV-enabled NIC to a VM in VMware vCloud Director, the operation fails with the following error message:

[ ########-####-####-####-############ ] Following errors occurred while updating network connections: The connected network is not SR-IOV capable whereas the NIC is of type SR-IOV.

Environment

VMware vCloud Director 10.x

Cause

In vCloud Director, a Distributed Virtual Port Group (DVPG) is associated with a distributed switch (DVS) connected to multiple ESXi hosts. For SR-IOV functionality to work as expected, SR-IOV must be enabled on all ESXi hosts that are part of the DVS.

If SR-IOV is not enabled on one or more of these hosts, attempts to connect an SR-IOV NIC to a VM may fail.

Resolution

Ensure SR-IOV is enabled on each ESXi host connected to the DVS.

Verify that SR-IOV is also enabled in the ESXi host settings within vSphere.
