Issue/Introduction

When attempting to add additional VMDK files or expand existing VMDK files on a VM that resides on vSAN storage with RDMs attached, the task fails with:

A general system error occurred: PBM error occurred during PreReconfigureCallback: Fault cause: pbm.fault.PBMFault ; Error when trying to run pre-provision validation; Invalid entity

Environment

VMware vCenter 7.x
VMware vCenter 8.x
VMware ESXi 7.x
VMware ESXi 8.x

Cause

The VM has pointer files to an RDM located on vSAN storage.

Resolution

Storage vMotion the pointer file to a VMFS datastore and then attempt the task again.
