Hosts rebooting via Auto Deploy hits purple screen after vCenter server is upgraded to 8.0. Error: failed to mount boot tardisks

Issue/Introduction

After the vCenter server is upgraded to 8.0, the existing auto deploy hosts do not complete the boot process, and we get the following error:

failed to mount boot tardisks

Environment

  • vCenter server 8.0.x
  • ESXi 7.0.x

Cause

The ESXi boot images are not referencing the base image after the vCenter server was upgraded to 8.0 

Resolution

Create a new image using the image builder with the required version and build by following the steps from the document below.
