Issue/Introduction

This article explains how to select the appropriate Guest OS option when creating a virtual machine for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later versions in VMware ESXi environments.

Symptoms:

  • In VMware ESXi 9.0, both VM options "MIRACLE LINUX 8 (64-bit)" and "MIRACLE LINUX (64-bit)" are available during VM creation for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later.
  • In VMware ESXi 8.0.x, VM option "MIRACLE LINUX 8 (64-bit)" is available during VM creation for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later
  • In VMware ESXi 7.0.x, VM option "Asianux 8 (64-bit)" is available during VM creation for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later

Environment

  • VMware ESXi 8.0.x
  • VMware ESXi 7.0.x
  • VMware ESXi 9.0

Cause

  • Following the conclusion of the Asianux project, MIRACLE LINUX (Japan) continued its development based on the Asianux codebase. As a result, MIRACLE LINUX 8 is effectively a continuation of Asianux 8.
  • Beginning with virtual hardware version 22, VMware introduced the new Guest OS selection: "MIRACLE LINUX (64-bit)" for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later versions.(Refer to Virtual machine hardware versions to determine the hardware version supported by each VMware product release.)

Resolution

  • For VMware ESXi 9.0 and later releases, Select "MIRACLE LINUX (64-bit)" as the Guest OS option when creating a VM for MIRACLE LINUX 8 and later.
  • For VMware ESXi 8.0.x, Select "MIRACLE LINUX 8 (64-bit)" as the Guest OS option.
  • For VMware ESXi 7.0.x, Select "Asianux 8 (64-bit)" as the Guest OS option.
