The reported capacity of a VMFS datastore fluctuates after it is extended

Issue/Introduction

After increasing the capacity of a VMFS datastore, the datastore capacity is fluctuating, within the vSphere Client, between the original capacity and new capacity.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0

Cause

Reported VMFS datastore capacity may fluctuate if some ESXi hosts are not aware of the change.  

This can arise if the datastore is expanded from an ESXi host rather than the vSphere Client, or if it's extended from the vSphere Client but cluster wide rescan does not complete on all hosts.

Resolution

Rescan storage on all hosts with access to the datastore.
